Cancer survivors, general public, past Olympic champions, corporate groups, and professional cyclists will take up the challenge on Saturday 13 August 2005 at Centennial Park (Cannons Triangle) to raise money for the cancer unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital. UPDATE, July 27, 2005: Due to the recent tragic event in Germany involving the AIS women's road cycling squad, the Ride for Life Committee has decided to donate half the proceeds from Cycling Australia race entries, any additional sponsorship gained towards the events on the day, plus donations made, directly towards the five female cyclists to assist their rehabilitation. It’s a fun day for everyone! And it’s for all ages. Whether you’re there to compete, cheer on cyclists, provide support for your corporate team, join in the fun ride, or just enjoy the atmosphere, it’s a day to mark in your calendar. Activities for children include straight line racing, skills riding, safety pit stops, and treasure hunts. First off the mark at 7.45am will be the Masters’ Challenge (including past Olympians) followed by Corporate Challenges, and State Championships. If you want to do more than cheer and still are a novice, than the Fun Ride is a perfect alternative - a chance to pedal for cancer from 12.30pm to 2pm. The day’s event will be followed by dinner and entertainment at the Randwick Labor Club including an auction. Additional tickets are required to be purchased for the dinner. And its all for a good cause – helping cancer sufferers and raising money for the Oncology Department at The Prince of Wales Hospital. The event is in its second year and made possible by the principal sponsor, Trust Company of Australia. This year the Committee welcomed on board, Olympic cyclist, Ben Kersten as Ambassador and Peter Garrett MP as Patron. So grab your blanket, bring a picnic or enjoy an Aussie barbeque in the great outdoors and cheer on many enthusiastic cyclists who may be riding in memory of a loved one and pedalling to raise funds for cancer research.
Entry fees are $30 for a standard entry, $40 for late entry, and a team of three can register for only $90. All proceeds from the day go to supporting the Oncology Department at The Prince of Wales Hospital. The course will feature a 2.5 kilometre circuit closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic Click here for 2004 results, report & photos. Program of EventsA full program of events can be found here.
